How to read your CUNY Degree Works audit (and plan next semester from it)
Updated October 2, 2026
What the audit is
Degree Works is the audit CUNY colleges use to compare the classes you have taken against your program's requirements. It is a planning tool, not an official ruling; your advisor and the registrar make the final call.
The parts that matter
- Requirement blocks: your degree is split into blocks such as general education, the major, and electives. Each block lists what is complete, in progress, or still needed.
- Complete vs in progress: classes you are taking now usually show as in progress. Count them as done only if you expect to pass.
- Still needed: the unmet lines in each block are your to-do list for future semesters.
- GPA and credits: the summary shows credits earned and your GPA, which can matter for your major and for graduation.
Turning it into a schedule
Pick the requirements with prerequisites first, since they unlock later classes. Then fill in the rest around your work and travel.
ChillSemester can read a Degree Works PDF you download from CUNYfirst and suggest classes you still need that are offered next term, with seat status and a stress score for the resulting schedule. We keep only the parsed requirements, never the PDF or your student ID, and you can delete it any time.
Always double check
Automated reading can miss unusual cases like transfer credit, exceptions and substitutions. Confirm anything important with your advisor before you register.
