How to get into a full CUNY class (what actually works)

Updated October 2, 2026

First: is it really full?

Seat counts change constantly during registration. A section that shows Closed in CUNYfirst can reopen a few hours later when someone drops or switches sections. Check the exact section again before you give up on it, and look at the other sections of the same course while you are there.

Things to try, in order

None of these is guaranteed, and the rules differ by college, but this is the order that costs you the least effort:

  • Join the waitlist if the section offers one. CUNYfirst shows whether a waitlist exists when you try to enroll. Not every section or college uses waitlists.
  • Email the department or the instructor and ask about a permission or override. Say which section, why you need it, and when you graduate or what it blocks.
  • Look for a different section, day or campus that works. Courses at another CUNY college may be possible through ePermit, if your own college allows it.
  • Check back during the first days of the semester. Drops are most common right before and just after classes start.
  • Use a seat alert so you are told the moment a seat opens instead of refreshing CUNYfirst by hand.

Why seat alerts help

Seats that open often get taken within minutes. A seat alert watches a specific section and emails you when its status changes from closed to open. It does not register you; you still have to enroll in CUNYfirst yourself, quickly.

ChillSemester's alerts check watched classes every couple of minutes during registration season, but no tool can guarantee a seat. Treat an alert as a head start, not a promise.

Have a backup plan

Build a schedule you can live with that does not depend on the full class, and note one or two alternative sections. If the seat opens, you swap; if it does not, you are already registered.
