How to build a CUNY class schedule without time conflicts or burnout

Updated October 5, 2026

1. List the courses you must take

Start from your Degree Works audit: required courses for your major, then the requirements that only a few courses fill. Do these first, because they have the fewest sections and fill up fastest.

2. Look at every section, not just the first one

Most courses have several sections with different days, times and professors. Write down two or three options for each required course. Some courses also need a lab, recitation or other companion section, so check that the times you pick for both fit together.

3. Check the week, not just each class

  • Early classes you will not make it to are worse than a slightly weaker professor.
  • Long gaps of two or more hours are wasted unless you use them on campus.
  • If you take classes at two campuses on the same day, leave travel time.
  • Put your work shifts in before you lock a schedule.

4. Choose professors on purpose

Compare the professors for each option by difficulty and how many students would take them again. Use a hard professor for a course you care about and a more relaxed one for a requirement you only need to pass.

5. Make a backup before registration opens

Your registration appointment time is fixed and popular sections can fill before your turn. Have a second choice for every course, and if a section you want is full, set up a seat alert to be told the moment it opens.
