CUNY schedule builder guide: build, filter and score your schedule
Updated October 5, 2026
1. Pick your courses
Search any of the 26 CUNY colleges by course, subject or professor name and add the courses you want. The builder then generates every combination of sections that has no time conflicts. For a course with a lecture plus a recitation or lab, it picks both together.
2. Tell it what you can't do
- Days off: avoid specific weekdays.
- Earliest start and latest end: no 8 AM classes, nothing after 8 PM.
- Open sections only: leave out anything already full.
- Keep a section: choose the exact section you want and the builder works around it.
- Work shifts: saved on your profile, they are treated as hard conflicts.
3. Read the stress score
Every schedule gets a score from 1 (chill) to 5 (brutal). It combines your professors' Rate My Professors difficulty and would-take-again numbers with the shape of your week: early starts, late finishes, long gaps, tight travel between campuses and heavy credit loads. The builder always shows why a schedule scored the way it did, so you know what to change.
4. Compare and save
Compare the best options side by side. Every account can save one schedule for free; a Semester or Year Pass saves as many as you like. A screenshot works too.
5. Watch the full ones
Full classes are left out of your options, and the builder lists what could not be scheduled. A seat alert emails you when a full section opens a seat. You still register yourself in CUNYfirst, and alerts are best effort.
