About this course
This introductory course in Cost Accounting provides a foundational understanding of how organizations measure, analyze, and manage costs to support internal decision-making and strategic planning. Through a combination of lectures, problem-solving exercises, and case studies, students will learn to apply cost accounting data to real-world business scenarios. The course introduces key concepts and techniques used to determine product and service costs, evaluate performance, and optimize resource allocation. Students will explore topics such as cost classification (direct vs. indirect costs, fixed vs. variable costs), cost behavior, and cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis. The course covers job order costing, process costing, and activity-based costing (ABC) systems, providing hands-on practice in allocating overhead and computing unit costs. Budgeting, standard costing, and variance analysis are also introduced, enabling students to understand cost control and performance measurement. Additional topics include break-even analysis, contribution margin, and relevant costing for decision-making. By the end of the course, students will be equipped with the tools to interpret cost information and contribute to financial and strategic decisions within an organization.
