About this course

This seminar takes a global approach to the history of medicine and public health from the nineteenth century to the present. What do we mean by the public?s health and who is responsible for its protection? Why have attempts to cope with epidemic and endemic disease varied so widely, when societies confronted the same pathogens? How have different societies and international actors balanced the rights of the individual against those of the community to protect themselves from the ravages of disease? How effective ? and coercive ?have those efforts been?
