30 hours plus conference; 3 creditsStudy of the acquisition of two or more languages with specialemphasis on Spanish-English bilingualism in the U.S. Philosophy andgeneral practices related to bilingual programs in U.S. schools.International perspectives on bilingualism with selected case studies.Discussion of language policy and planning in developed and developingcountries. Theories, writings, research studies in socio- andpsycholinguistics. Application centered on the psycho-sociologicalbackground for language development in Puerto Rican and other Latinochildren. Independent research and professional developmentworkshops.Prerequisite: 3 graduate credits in education, the social sciences, or thehumanities or permission of the chairperson.
