About this course
This course explores the history, evolution, and functions ofprobation departments and parole agencies as componentsof the criminal justice system. The course also focuses on theproblems of high rates of revocations due to violations of theconditions imposed on probationers and parolees, and thehigh rates of recidivism. By studying intermediate sanctionsand parole, the course will grapple with questions about thesocial reaction to crime as well as the challenges associated withreentry into mainstream society after years of confinement inpenal institutions.
