About this course
In this honors seminar, first-year students are introduced to the complex systems that shape the lives of children, youth, and families in New York City. This course challenges students to think critically about youth development in the context of intersectional identities, systemic gaps and assets, community strengths, historical contexts, and social movements. Through the lens of community-engaged social work and education, students will be immersed in experiential learning. The course combines fieldwork, storytelling, civic engagement, and interdisciplinary learning. By the end of the semester, students develop a community project proposal addressing a specific issue facing NYC youth and families, laying the groundwork for their spring advocacy partnerships.
