About this course

This course looks at depictions of groups marginalized in Greek and Roman antiquity and often referred to as ?the outsider? or ?the other? in contemporary discourse. By examining selected passages from Greek and Roman literature and other sources from Graeco-Roman antiquity, it investigates how Greeks and Romans depicted and reacted to strong or unconventional women and other races, ethnic groups, and cultures. Our studies should give us glimpses of different sides of ancient cultures and provide an opportunity to uncover and compare the values, prejudices, and experiences of Greeks, Romans, and other ancient peoples with our own.
