About this course
What puts cities at the forefront of climate change? Which communities are the most disproportionately affected, and why? What roles can cities play as models for reducing climate change? This class will examine the groups most severely affected by climate change, as well as the strategies that different cities around the world have adopted to adapt to and mitigate the effects of climate change. We will also look at how political institutions at different levels of government (global, national, state, and local) have tried to address climate change through policies, but also in reaction to the push by political movements and financial institutions (often in different or opposite directions). While the focus will be on New York City, this course will consider the different policies by cities around the world, in the Global North and the Global South.
