About this course
This course proceeds from an understanding that the problem of climate that we currently face is both a scientific and a cultural one. Thus in this course students will learn about the state of research on Earth?s changing climate and be able to understand the basic scientific principles underlying this research, while relating this to the ways that musicians and composers from around the world and in different historical eras have responded to the climate crisis through performance and activism. The course encourages students to think interdisciplinarily between the sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities, examining the intersections of the fields of climate science and music studies for what each can learn from the other philosophically and methodologically.
