About this course
Using the three-part film series produced by the BBC and supplementing it with relevant readings, the course examines the history and experience of the British Empire, from the perspectives of both the rulers and the ruled. The BBC series embodies original archival film--much of which had never before been seen--together with personal letters and diary extracts, helping to capture the many complexities and contradictions of life in the British Empire. This and other sources will allow students to become familiar with both primary and secondary historical sources.
