About this course

Sustainability is meeting the needs of the present without compromising future. This will necessitate the transitioning from ?stock limited? (e.g. fossil fuels) resources and to ?flux limited? (renewable) alternatives. Staying within the constrains of ?flux limited? resources will require a comprehensive re-engineering of the everyday life to minimize energy consumption, where ?environmental? and ?civil? engineers will play a significant role. This energy course revisits the fundamental physics and chemistry determining the energy related processes both from the perspectives of producing and consuming energy. The primary objective of the course is to prepare students to become energy conscious engineers who can factor in energy considerations into their engineering designs. The course is split to ?core? energy topics that are meant to refresh the students knowledge of the principals of physics and chemistry related to energy. The core topics are complemented with ?engineering? topics to apply energy constrains in engineering designs. The course will target specific aspect(s) of engineering constrains on built infrastructures (e.g. transportation, water supply, waste management, housing, etc.) and environmental preservation (air and water pollution, ecosystem services, etc.). Besides studying the relevant scientific and engineering literature the students will implement engineering designs that factors in energy similar to life cycle analyses.
