About this course
This course develops the algebraic topics that are needed for most basic quantitative courses at the college, including factoring, quadratics, linear equations, rates of change, rational and irrational expressions, functions and their graphs, non-linear systems of equations and related applications. In addition to attending lecture three times per week, students in MTH 1023 will participate in a mandatory weekly session of Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL). During weekly PLTL session, students meet in small groups to work collaboratively on practice problems to help master concepts and develop problem solving skills. A trained PLTL Peer Leader will guide the group. Students need to bring class notes and textbooks to every PLTL meeting. Students can receive credit for only one of the following classes: MTH 1023 or 1030. These courses may substitute for each other in the F-grade replacement policy. The policy on repeating courses covers any combination of MTH 1023, FSPM 1023, MTH 1030, or FSPM 1031: all combinations of these courses will be treated identically as three attempts. The policy on repeating courses also covers any combinations of CSTM 0120, FSPM 0121, FSPM 1023, MTH 1023: any combinations of these courses will count identically as three attempts. Not open to students with credit for FSPM 1023, FSPM 1031, MTH 1030, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2002T, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2009T, 2010, 2011, 2030, 2205, 2206, 2207, 2600, 2610, 2630, or any course at the 3000 level or above.
