About this course

This class examines the diverse Asian communities that have lived in New York City from the late 1800s to the present. Through readings, lectures, fieldtrips and discussions, students will gain knowledge about communities from multiple regions of Asia (including East, South, Southeast, Central and West Asia) and Asian diasporic populations that reside in the city. Potential topics to be explored include community development, transnationalism, art and culture, racial segregation, gentrification and Asian institutions. The impact of Asian communities on New York City through political activism and organizing will also be considered.
