About this course

Introduces students to the issues, debates and themes in the study of contemporary politics in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). In particular, why do the people of the MENA region continue to live under authoritarianism even after brief attempts at democratization following the Arab Spring uprisings? We will examine a range of explanations for authoritarianism?s persistence, as well as strategies used by ordinary citizens, especially youth and women, to empower themselves.
