ART A6506

Art & History - History & Art · 3 credits · Spring 2027

About this course

This course will consider the interrelationships between art and history. How do we think about history today? Which history? Whose histories? What are the factors that play into the shaping of a history? In this class, we will look at contemporary artists working with the past as a part of their artistic practices and discover how archival research plays a not insignificant role in today?s discourses. We will consider artists? studios as historical sites and visit examples of single artists? museums and foundations to see how artists? legacies are developed, and how individual stories, narratives and estates play their roles in preserving an artist?s legacy. Similarly, the commissions of memorials and their representations of historical figures, reexaminations and recontextualizations will also be discussed in this course.
