Populism in America · 3 credits · Spring 2027
About this course
Populism is one of the most hotly debated subjects in modern politics. This course surveys the phenomenon of populism with a focus on the United States (though we will also examine comparative perspectives). The class will explore the different ways in which populism is conceived in contemporary cases. Drawing from a diversity of perspectives, we will work through the problems with defining populism, identifying and classifying the phenomenon, and focusing on solutions. The course goals are an ability to define and identify populism credibly, convincingly critique opposing perspectives, and generate novel questions about the phenomenon.
