ENGL B3004
Craft of Fiction · 3 credits · Spring 2027
About this course
This course examines the expression of paradox in fiction. Through the works of various 20th-century European writers and filmmakers of Jewish descent, we will explore characters, situations, sentiments, and ideas that exist in tension, such as acculturation and estrangement, or faith and doubt. We will also examine the ambiguities of Jewishness, treating it not as a fixed identity but as a complex set of experiences expressed through language, form, and memory. The ability to evoke opposing feelings and ideas is a hallmark of nuanced writing. The aim of this course is to help you train your mind not only to inhabit contradiction, but to write it.
