3 hours, 3 creditsInterdisciplinary examination of debates in the African diaspora throughthe lenses of history, literature, politics, and culture. Debates about freedom in the age ofdecolonization. Topics include: W.E.B. Du Bois? schisms with Booker T. Washington andMarcus Garvey; Black cultural movements such as Afrocubanismo, Harlem Renaissance andN�gritude as expressed by Paulette Nardal, �douard Glissant, Aim� C�saire; postcolonial Africanand Pan-African World intellectualism and L�opold S�dar Senghor, Julius Nyerere, and KwameNkrumah; gender and Pan-Africanism; the transformation of Black women?s 20th centuryactivism and Eslanda Roberson, Shirley Graham DuBois and Claudia Jones; social media andcontemporary constructions of racial identity. Africana Studies 3116 and American Studies 3309 are the same course.
