How Democracies Rise and Fall · 3 credits · Fall 2026
About this course
Why do some countries become democracies while others do not? Why do some fail while others succeed? Why and how do democracies break down? This course traces the process by which states transform from authoritarian to democratic governance and vice-versa, examining the effects that economics, culture, political development, and institutional factors have on the process of democratic transition, consolidation and breakdown.
