ENGL B2131
Writing Queer · 3 credits · Spring 2027
About this course
How do you write a desire for which no form yet exists? This course studies the literary invention of queer desire from the late nineteenth century to the present. It attends to the techniques by which writers have given shape to experience that the available language could not hold. We read novels, essays, film, poems, short stories, and songs alongside the major work in queer theory ? Foucault, Sedgwick, Butler, and more recent critics. Some weeks take us outside Europe and North America, to places where ?queer? is not the word people use, or where there is no word at all. And we reflect on the politics of naming the unnamed.
