About this course
A social history of immigration and ethnicity that focuses on topics such as immigrant institutions (including family, church, community life, unions, gangs, fire companies, saloons, and theatres), social mobility, and the role of ethnicity. Class-based responses to immigration will be addressed, including assimilation, nativism, racism, and restriction. Topics covered will also include immigrant ghettos and boss rule, changing immigrant stereotypes, work experience, labor violence, and the methods of social control.
