About this course

Colonialism has been a constant in human history: the Phoenicians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Greeks, the Romans, and many more established colonies. The modern version, which is the focus of this course, began with the Age of Discovery (circa 1500), led by the Iberian powers (Portugal and Spain), and strengthened by northern Europeans such as the British, the Dutch, and the French, among others. Remarkably, it shaped the world we inhabit today. Volumes have been written on the subject from Jean-Paul Sartre to Edward Said to Frantz Fanon, Chinua Achebe, Aim Csaire, and others. Equally Remarkably, its foundations were laid by European trading companies (forerunners of multinational corporations) that ravaged the world in pursuit of god, glory and gold. Readings, visuals, discussion and a term paper.
