About this course
This course examines the role of private philanthropy in democratic governance. It surveys the historical development of philanthropy in the United States and introduces students to the contemporary philanthropic landscape, including private foundations, community foundations, donor-advised funds, and nonprofit organizations. In doing to, it engages current debates about philanthropic impact, effectiveness, scale, and accountability. It helps to analyze how philanthropic institutions shape and implement public priorities through agenda-setting, research, policy design, and implementation of partnerships with government.
