PSC 31190
Order & Disorder in World Pol · 3 credits · Spring 2027
About this course
This course examines traditional concepts of world order in light of the current transformation of international politics. The goal is to acquire a solid command of established notions of IR theory but also to be alert to contemporary political phenomena that may require us to revise our thinking if we want to make sense of world politics today. Can we still refer to "just war theory" or talk about a "liberal international order," and if so how? How are technological developments disrupting the material foundations of both "hard" and "soft" power, and redefining global hierarchies? Can the doctrines of nuclear deterrence, and the risks associated with nuclear arsenals, also apply to the arms race in the field of AI?
