About this course

Through this survey course in Western Music History, students will explore the evolution and history of music, ranging from the Medieval Period to the twenty-first century, through the study and analysis of musical works written by European and American composers. Students will listen to and analyze various art music genres including instrumental solo music, chamber and orchestral music, as well as vocal genres in order to examine the evolution of form, compositional techniques, and instruments that have occurred throughout the past one thousand years in Western Music. Further, students will engage in the critical listening of a variety of musical works from these time periods in order to assess elements such as texture, timbre and melody structure
