About this course
"Science, Technology, and Society in East Asia" is an interdisciplinary course that investigates how technological innovation and scientific advancement have driven economic development and the growth of burgeoning middle classes across the region. Examining the intersection of politics, culture, social structure, and economics, the course examines the transformative trajectories of East Asian nations, with a particular emphasis on China?s strategic ascent toward superpower status. Students will critically analyze how emerging technologies, state-led industrial policies, and digital infrastructures are reshaping local societies, redefining global markets, and accelerating the transition toward alternatives to the Western liberal model.
