Nazi Germany · 3 credits · Spring 2027

About this course

This course explores the history of Nazi Germany. We will start by examining the background to this history, including the founding of Germany as a unified nation in the 19th century, its military defeat in World War I, and the crisis-ridden period of the Weimar Republic, which preceded the Nazi regime. We will then look at the origins, structure, and evolution of National Socialism and of the Nazi state; Hitler and the cult of personality; Nazi medicine and racial hygiene; everyday life and resistance in the Third Reich; the Nazi ?new order? in Europe; the Second World War; and the Holocaust. Lastly, we will examine efforts to place the history of the Third Reich within a comparative framework.
